Don’t Scrap TETFUND – Lokoja Varsity VC Begs FG

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi has appealed to the Federal Government not to abolish the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund).

Akinwumi made the appeal on Thursday in Lokoja while speaking with newsmen in Felele, the Permanent site of the university.

The VC posited that university will collapse completely in Nigeria if TETFUND seized to be in existence, considering the critical role the agency play in the educational sector.

He explained that TETFUND has been playing a pivotal role in assisting government-owned higher institutions at the federal and state levels in the area of infrastructure and capacity building of the staff.

“Most of the modern buildings in the Nigerian Universities were built through the assistance of TETFUND. Even in the Federal University here, our Senate Building that we will start using by next week was built through TETFUND.

“There are many buildings in the he school here that were built through the assistance of TETFUND while others were donated by some individuals.

“The proposal to scrap TETFUND by end of 2030 will be counter productive. Infact, scraping of TETFUND will collapse the university completely in Nigeria.”

The VC said the institution has been grappling with paucity of fund, urging the Federal Government to redirect attention to the tertiary instructions.

He said the university intention to start her Law Faculty is being hampered by the Nigeria Legal Council who are yet to visit the institution to give their nod for the take off.

He however enjoyed cooperate and spirited individuals to make huge contribution to university, said the Federal Government can no longer fund education alone.
