ACCIDENT: Activist Call for Immediate Action, As Lokoja Varsity Suspends Lecture for 2 -Days
A Human Rights activist, Abdul Miliki has called on the federal government to take drastic action in curbing the menace of accident especialy on the Lokoja – Abuja highway
Miliki who is the Executive Director, Conscience for Human Rights and Conflicts Resolution stated this on the sideline of the road mishap that claimed seven person in Lokoja on Monday – four of whom were students of the Federal University Lokoja.
Miliki who described the Monday accident as ‘One accident too many”, urged the Federal Government to take cautionary action to forestall future occurrence
“The tragic accident in felele area of Lokoja is becoming worrisome. In the last one year or so, people have lost their lives innocently and avoidable occurrences.
“The location, hosts federal university, the state polytechnic, an international market and as it’s a federal high way make it vulnerable to high vehicular and human movement.
“We call on the federal government through the federal ministry of works; the state government, Road safety Corp, the Nigeria police and other relevant stakeholders to put heads together and do something urgently to stop all these constant losses of life and property along felele road.
“We extend our condolences to those who lost their love ones.”
In a related development,the Federal University Lokoja has suspended academic activities for two days following the accident.
The suspension was conveyed by the SUG Secretary General in a message to the student union body on Monday night.
The statement said the suspension was to enabled the university community mourn the death of the four students that were among the victim of the Monday accident.
A trailer had on Monday afternoon along the Felele – Lokoja – Abuja road experienced a break failure and crushed one of the university shuttle bus, leading to death of seven occupants, four of whom were students of the university.
