WINDSTORM: NEMA, KOSEMA CONDUCT ASSESSMENT IN AFFECTED KOGI COMMUNITIES
Sequel to the report of a devastating windstorm that wreaked havoc in several communities in Kogi State, the State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA) in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency conducted on-the-sport assessment to ascertain the level of damages caused by windstorm disaster in Mopamuro, Ofu, Bassa and Dekina LGAs respectively.
The two sister Agencies led by the Executive Secretary KOSEMA, Alh Mouktar Atimah, along with the representative of NEMA Abuja Operation Office Mrs Ann Agbo visited Mopamuro Local Government, and were received by the Chairman of the Local Governmen, Hon. Ademola Bello and the traditional Ruler, Oba Muyiwa Ebun, who appreciated the gesture and offered prayers.
During the visit, the team assessed the level of destruction in affected communities where over 600 individuals were affected, and properties worth over N100 million were lost. The Mopamuro Local Government Chairman thanked the team for their prompt assessment and concern for the affected victims, and appealed for government intervention through SEMA and NEMA.
The Executive Secretary KOSEMA, Alh Mouktar Atimah and Mrs. Ann Agbo, assured the affected victims of quick response interventions from Kogi State and Federal Government through SEMA and NEMA.
In a similar vein, the team visited Ofu and Bassa Local Government Areas, and assessed the windstorm damages in some communities. While on-the-spot assessment at Ofu LGA over 1,000 persons were affected, and properties worth N200 million were lost while over 700 victims were affected, and properties worth above N800 million were lost in Bassa LGA. The Ofu LGA Council Chairman, Hon. Muhammed Lawal Musa and Bassa LGA Chairman, Hon. Adama Theophilus, who received the team thanked them for showing love to their people and appealed for state and federal government interventions.
The Executive Secretary SEMA, emphasized that the government of Kogi State led by His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo is committed in providing good governance, placing zero tolerance to any forms of disasters. He further stressed that this joint assessment aims to determine the extent of the damage and identify areas of goernment’s interventions to support the affected communities.
In another development, KOSEMA Boss and his team conducted on-the-spot assessment of the windstorm impacts at Dekina Township and Agojeju Ajocheji community to ascertain the level of destruction in Dekina Local Government Area.
During the assessment, Alh Mouktar Atimah paid a courtesy visit to the Ejeh of Dekina, Alhaji Usman Obaji, the chairman of the Dekina Traditional Council. He emphasized that the visit underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and traditional institutions in disaster management.
He sympathized with the affected victims and assured the Royal father that the state government under the leadership of Alhaji Usman Ododo, would continue to prioritize the needs of the people and provide possible interventions.
The Ejeh of Dekina, Alhaji Usman Obaji, thanked the Executive Secretary for his prompt response to the situation and appealed for government’s quick interventions.
The KOSEMA/NEMA visit to all the affected Local government areas demonstrates the agency’s commitment to responding to emergencies and providing support to the victims. The two sister agencies through state and federal government are expected to help alleviate the suffering of the victims and restore hope to the affected communities. Overall, the assessment visit achieved it’s objectives.
