FLOOD: KOSEMA ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS IN INFO, WOMEN AFFAIRS MINISTRIES

In response to the 2025 flood disaster and the rising in water level based on the guage, the Kogi State Disaster Response Team ably led by the Executive Secretary Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, paid advocacy visit to the Hon. Commissioner for Ministry of Information and Communication, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

In his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary SEMA, Alh Mouktar Atimah, emphasized that flood disaster management is multidimensional and there is need to enhance Collaboration in emergency preparedness and response strategies. He futher reiterated the importance of the partnership between Kogi SEMA and Ministry of Information in building disaster campaigns and community resilience to flooding.

During this visit, Atimah said that the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has charged Disaster Response Team to ensure safety of lives and property in any forms of disasters, adding that the visit is to ensure further exploration of joint initiatives, foster robust collaboration for effective dissemination of crucial flood safety measures to the public, community mobilization network, and key information to the government for prompt response and interventions to the flood victims.

Furthermore, he stressed that the rising in wter level based on the guage made SEMA to open fourty-two (42) camps, highlighting all the communities in flood prone Local Goverment Areas that are already submerged by water, especially in Ibaji, Idah and Owara Community in Lokoja LGA, and the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) have started moving to various designated camps.

Responding, the Hon. Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, appreciated Kogi State Disaster Response Team for the timely visit. His words on key points discussed include the importance of collaboration, dissemination of information to the grassroots for safety, information to the government at all levels and national and International Agencies for relief interventions, promising necessary support and hand-shake collaboration as Ministry is being recognized as one of the critical stakeholders in disaster management.

In a similar vein, the team extended the visit to Kogi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the team was received by the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, Hajia Fatimah Momoh.

In his remarks, Atimah emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration to effectively mitigate the 2025 flood, stressing the role of the Ministry in disaster management, especially in the areas of social protection and care for the women and children in the IDPs camps.

While responding, the Honoirable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Fatimah Momoh, thanked the team for the visit, and assured them of the Ministry’s readiness to collaborate with SEMA to effectively mitigate 2025 flood disaster.

The visit brought together key stakeholders in disaster management, including the Representatives from various ministries, Representatives from Federal Road Safety Corps, Representatives from Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Representatives from Federal and State Fire Services; as well as Representative from Nigeria Red Cross.
